Melissa McCarthy may be in line to take the leading role in the Ghostbusters reboot… but her busy schedule provides a stumbling block.
After the upcoming new Ghostbusters movie was announced, fans were surprised to find that the film will be a reboot… and will focus on a team of female Ghostbusters. But while Melissa McCarthy seemed like the obvious choice to lead the upcoming comedy, it looks as though a busy schedule may stop her from starring.
Even if she is the current front-runner.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 44-year-old actress is currently in talks with Columbia Pictures for the starring role.
“Melissa McCarthy is in early talks to star in the female-focused reboot of the classic comedy, directed by The Heat and Bridesmaids helmer Paul Feig,” they revealed. “But there are several hurdles that need to be overcome before McCarthy can reteam with Feig for what would be their fourth movie together.”
Of course, McCarthy currently has a very busy schedule due to her on-going CBS comedy series Mike & Molly. And with an already busy film slate (including Michelle Darnell) it looks as though she might not have time for everything.
Thankfully, it looks as though that might not be a problem… as long as her schedule can be rearranged.
“Sources say that talks are underway that would see McCarthy, who became a movie star working with Feig in Bridesmaids, shoot Michelle Darnell in mid-March, allowing her then to shoot Ghostbusters in June… Sources also caution that there is a chance the schedule will not work out. In addition, certain creative meetings need to take place with McCarthy.”
The Ghostbusters reboot is said to be an origin story of the new female-led Ghostbusting team, rather than a sequel or ‘hand-off’ from the original 1984 Ghostbusters.
Of course, with Paul Feig directing, it makes sense to pair him with Melissa McCarthy – making this their fourth film together. But whether or not this works out is another matter entirely.
