The upcoming Minecraft movie has hit a bit of a snag… but it’s not a pesky creeper. Instead, director Shaun Levy and both writers have now quit the upcoming video game movie.
Kieran and Michele Mulroney have both joined Levy in leaving the Warner Bros. film after being brought on to develop the project. But it sounds as though expectations didn’t quite match up when it comes to the cult video game’s developer.
“Levy and the Mulroney’s presented the new idea to the studio last month but it didn’t mesh with what the video game developers were looking for,” said Variety. “Levy and the studio felt it was the best idea that the two move on and look in another direction.”
But what does this mean for the upcoming Minecraft movie?
Well, for now it looks as though WB will have to head back to the drawing board… especially if they don’t have a script that game developer Mojang is happy with. But who can they get to bring his vision of ‘Minecraft’ to life?
I can’t help thinking that perhaps WB has bitten off more than it can chew. After all, the developers themselves have locked horns with fans and Minecraft celebrities in the past. Will they really give in to Warner Bros?
Either way, it looks as though the Minecraft movie has taken a huge step backwards. And if it happens at all, the studio will have to start looking somewhere entirely new.
Of course, I can’t help wondering exactly how Minecraft will make the jump to the big screen. I mean, it’s no doubt an excellent video game… but can a film that’s based on a world made out of 1m x 1m blocks really compete with more traditional movies?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it seems the wait just got even longer.
