Neill Blomkamp explains that his Alien sequel won’t undo the events of Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection.
Neill Blomkamp joining the classic sci-fi franchise is one of the most exciting stories in the last few weeks… and it means another chance to redeem the franchise after the appalling Resurrection. But while it certainly sounds promising, it seems his comments about following on from Aliens may have been taken the wrong way.
And now he promises his movie won’t undo Alien 3… or Resurrection.
During an interview with AlloCine, the 35-year-old sci-fi director revealed that despite reports, his upcoming movie won’t undo the last two sequels.
“My favorites are the first two movies,” he explained, “so I want to make a film that’s connected to Alien and Aliens. That’s my goal. I’m not trying to undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection; I just want it to be connected to Alien 1 and 2.”
Of course, what that means is unclear for time being. After all, the events of the third movie clearly follow on from Aliens, leaving little room for manoeuvre.
But while Ripley and pals were left floating through space at the end of the second film, could we see another adventure shoehorned in-between the time we pick up with them in Alien 3?
I’m not so sure… after all, Neill Blomkamp has expressed little desire to work according to other filmmaker’s plans in the past. Why would he want to do so now? He’s certainly on the more independent end of Hollywood. But when it comes to this franchise, he may have to make some compromises.
What this means for Blomkamp’s movie remains unclear.
But given the disdain for Resurrection, I get the feeling both Blomkamp and the studio will be keen to stay away from any stories involving cloning.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
