It’s official – the nominees for the 2019 Academy Awards have been announced.
This year, there are some big surprises – not least of which, finding the animated comic book movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse nominated for an award.
As always, there are some safe bets too, including Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born… but with plenty of genre flicks included alongside them, it looks as though the 96th Academy Awards is going to be an interesting one.
How do they stack up? Well, Roma leads the nominations with a whopping 11 nods, followed closely by The Favourite with 10. A Star is Born and Vice follow closely with 8 nominations each, while Black Panther received 7 in total, including a nomination for Best Picture. That’s right – Black Panther is the first comic book movie to ever be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
BlackkKlansman unsurprisingly found its way to 6 nominations too, with Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody managing 5 each.

There are certainly a few surprises – it’s great to see comic book movies getting some recognition, but after Disney’s big push for a Best Picture nomination for Black Panther it’s not exactly unexpected.
However, seeing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse up there is a real treat, going toe-to-toe with The Incredibles 2 no less. I can’t help thinking that the Pixar superhero flick is likely to take home the award there, but it’s still great to see our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Men getting a nod.
What do you think are the big surprises in the 2019 Oscars? Were there any big Oscars snubs that you think should have been nominated?
