After the success of Pacific Rim a sequel was almost inevitable… but where will they go from there? It looks as though Pacific Rim 2 will feature a world after the breach has closed.
It’s no secret that Pacific Rim has already secured an upcoming sequel. And after the film performed rather well at the Asian box office, it seems the colossal Jaegers have some legs. But that’s not all – it now looks as though the upcoming sequel will pave the way for a third film.
But what can we expect of Pacific Rim 2? Director Guillermo Del Toro gives us a hint.
In an interview with Collider, the Pacific Rim director revealed that the upcoming sequel will take the story in a very different direction.
“It’s a few years after the first one,” he said. “It’s not an immediate follow-up. It’s the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”
Anyone who’s already seen Pacific Rim will know that by the end of the movie, the interdimensional rift between Earth and the Kaiju home world has been destroyed… and presumably sealed shut forever.
Of course, the notion of starting the film in a world without Kaiju is an interesting move. For one thing, it takes away the imminent threat straight off the bat. But that’s hardly going to last for very long.
“It’s quite a different movie from the first one,” said Del Toro. “But I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them.”

“I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn’s] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him. You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”
For now, Del Toro makes no mention of the heroic Jaeger pilots themselves. But I can’t help thinking it won’t be long before they clamber back inside those giant robots to face some of those pesky, world-destroying Kaiju.
But could we see the Jaegar go head to head against each other? Now there’s an idea…
Pacific Rim 2 is expected in cinemas from 7 April 2017.
