Red Dwarf will return to British TV… as Lister, Rimmer and the gang secure two more series with UKTV.
It’s been over two years since the crew of the Red Dwarf appeared on our screens – in Red Dwarf X for the UK TV channel, Dave. But while many of us hoped for more in the series, it looks as though it’s finally been confirmed.
That’s right – classic sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf will be back.
Two all-new series have been commissioned by UKTV which will bring Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn back to our screens on Dave.
The shows will begin airing in 2016 and 2017 after filming begins this autumn… and according to The Independent, Craig Charles has now quite his full-time role on Coronation Street in order to concentrate on the Red Dwarf revival.
“I feel I owe it to my colleagues on Red Dwarf to join them in filming the new series and finding out what is in store for Lister and the others,” he explained. “I would love to return to Coronation Street at some point in the future.”
“I have had an absolutely fantastic 10 years on Coronation Street and I will be very sad to leave. Lloyd has become a huge part of my life and I have made some amazing friends with whom I will always keep in touch.”
And show creator Doug Naylor is ecstatic.
“Frustratingly it’s taken until now to get our ducks in a row and all the boys available at the same time,” he said. “Now they are, we’re all absolutely delighted.”
But will the crew of the Red Dwarf have in store for them?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but I can’t help thinking it marks an extraordinary return for the boys. After all, Craig Charles wouldn’t give up his stint on Coronation Street for nothing.
