Although Rogue never appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past it looks as though scenes featuring this fan favourite will be restored for a new, special edition cut.
It’s one of the biggest travesty’s in recent superhero history – despite filming a number of scenes for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Anna Paquin was eventually bumped from the film due to an increasingly lengthy run-time. But what about that added extra sub-plot? We’ve already been promised that it would one day see the light of day. And now Simon Kinberg reveals that over 10 minutes of footage will be added in a new cut of the film.
“It’s a big chunk, a substantial part of the movie,” he told Variety about Rogue’s cut scenes. “We want to give (fans) the fullest picture of the film — behind the camera, and in front of it. Every movie has scenes that are cut out, but not every movie has scenes cut out with such a beloved character.”
Of course, the cut scenes were revealed even before the movie appeared in cinemas… and it said to involve a sub-plot where Rogue helps Charles and the rebellious mutants with a little mission to save them.
“The Rogue subplot was originally there because I wanted a mission for the older Charles and Eric to do,” Kinberg told Empire. “Something like Unforgiven – two last gunslingers, Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman – that kind of a mission for them. I just loved the idea of that. Nothing in the story necessitated that, but just for a lark, I thought it would be a cool thing to see, because we may never see it again.”
But what about Rogue’s involvement?
“When I initially wrote that, Kitty’s power was running out, and there was this super silly serum that was down in a farmhouse… it was terrible. I don’t even think it went to script, but it went to outline, and [First Class writer/director] Matthew Vaughn said it was terrible, and he was right.”
Of course, whether or not this actual subplot made it to film remains to be seen. But either way, I get the feeling we can expect quite an impressive cameo from everyone’s favourite mutant. And it’s certainly got me convinced to pre-order the Blu-ray.
