Shazam! Starts Filming Early 2018

DC’s Shazam! begins filming early next year… which could mean a peak at his costume sooner rather than later.

By Ryan Leston 17th December 2017

It looks as though Shazam! is just around the corner.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming DC comic book movie will begin filming soon – sometime in early 2018.

“Pinewood Toronto Studios is […] set to host in early 2018 shoots for the DC Comics action flick Shazam! [as well as] an unspecified Netflix project and James Cameron’s and Guillermo del Toro’s Fantastic Voyage remake.”

Shazam Will Be Part Of The DC Cinematic Universe

Unfortunately, little else is mentioned about Shazam!

But the film will likely be making a big impact on the Toronto movie scene, as Pinewood Studios Toronto is planning a big expansion to accommodate a host of huge blockbusters.

“They gobble up a lot of space. So we need to expand,” said Pinewood Toronto Studios investor Alfredo Romano.

Currently, the plan is to add an additional 96,000 square feet of studio space by the end of 2019… and that includes additional stages, workshops, and production offices as they aim to double their effective production space to around 700,000 square feet.

And that’s going to be a huge boon to both the studio and the local film industry.

Shazam Won’t Tie Into The Justice League?

Will we get to see Shazam! hitting the stages anytime soon?

Considering the vastly different tone to DC’s other comics, I can’t wait to find out which direction they’re going with this. Will Warner Bros. hedge their bets with a gritty adaptation or remain faithful to the comics with a cheesy, retro-style family film?

I can’t help thinking that Shazam! would fit more with the latter.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But with a start date of ‘early 2018’ it’s not going to be too far off.

Shazam! stars Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton and Mark Strong.

David F. Sandberg will direct the movie, based on a script by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.

Shazam! heads to cinemas on 5 April 2019.
