Spider-Man’s Aunt May Gets A Solo Movie?

Sony is struggling with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise… and now it looks as though they’re really clutching at straws with an Aunt may spin-off.

Could Aunt May really get a Spider-Man spin-off?

It’s no secret that Sony is struggling with the Spider-Man franchise… and now it looks as though they’re really clutching at straws with an Aunt may spin-off.

According to the Latino Review, it looks as though Sony has really gone over the edge this time, resorting to an Aunt May spin-off that will be based on her never-mentioned espionage past.

“Sony is pursuing an Aunt May movie,” they said. “Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker.”

Of course, the immediate question this raises is rather simple: Why?

There are plenty of more action-oriented characters in the Spiderverse that would make excellent solo offerings. Most notably, Venom and Carnage. But it seems that Sony is now determined to bring the worst possible Spider-Man movies to our screens.

And this even attempts to rip off Marvel’s upcoming Agent Carter series.

“The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying ‘classier Agent Carter’ without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series.”

If this turns out to be true, I can’t help thinking this is a rather cynical way of shouldering in on Marvel’s efforts to bring more diversity into the superhero sphere, bringing another strong female character into the fray while stepping on Agent Carter’s toes.

But will it really take off?

Let’s face it – there are far more interesting female characters that could easily stand-up with their own solo movie. We’ve already seen Felicia hardy introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 so why not give her a Black Cat solo film?

First Look At Ant-Man Villain Yellowjacket?

At this stage, it sounds as though Sony is trying anything and everything to reignite interest in their faltering franchise. But this surely has to be the wrong way to go about it. After all, who really wants to know what Aunt May was up to in her youth? I’ll hazard a guess: no-one.

What do you think of this wild rumour? Would Sony really give Aunt May her own movie? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
