The all-new Supergirl may come from a background in musical theatre… as Glee star Melissa Benoist prepares to suit up as the Kryptonian teen.
After plenty of rumours about who will become DC’s latest super heroine in the upcoming Supergirl TV series, it looks as though CBS has made its choice. And while the likes of Claire Holt were apparently up for the role, it’s relative newcomer Melissa Benoist who will don the famous costume.
But will she be any good?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS has finally confirmed who will be playing Supergirl… and it’s Glee actress, Melissa Benoist.
“CBS and Warner Bros. Television have found their Supergirl,” they reveal. “Melissa Benoist has been tapped to play the iconic DC Comics character.”
And the actress herself soon took to Twitter to reveal her excitement.
“I wish there was a superhero emoji,” she said. “But seriously, sans emoji… I AM SO EXCITED!”
Of course, Benoist has appeared in the recently Oscar-nominated film Whiplash… but is perhaps best known for starring in Glee Season 4 as one of McKinley High’s new students. It’s in this show that Benoist actually donned the costume of another DC hero – appearing as Wonder Woman while the class channelled their inner heroes.
Although the upcoming Supergirl series will see Superman’s Kryptonian cousin take to the small screen in her own adventure, this is hardly the first time she’s appeared on TV – with Laura Vandevoort taking the role in the recent ‘Smallville’ series.
But this new show certainly gives her a bit more screen time.
The hour-long drama focusses on Kara Zor-El – Superman’s cousin who ends up coming to Earth after the destruction of Krypton. Taken in by a foster family a-la Supes himself, she’s forced to learn how to control her powers and keep them a secret…
Of course, she’s soon forced to use her powers for good after an unexpected disaster tips her hand… and that’s presumably when she begins to adopt the persona of Supergirl. Embracing her natural abilities, it looks as though the criminals of Metropolis have yet-another super powered foe.
But will Benoist make the role her own?
If you ask me, she’s not exactly the obvious choice for Supergirl… and perhaps that’s a good thing. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
What do you think of Melissa Benoist? Will she really make a great Supergirl? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
