Tom Hardy’s Venom has just found its first villain…
And it’s none other than Woody Harrelson.
According to Variety, the 56-year-old actor will join Venom alongside Tom Hardy. And although they don’t have definitive character details, they do have some idea about who he’s playing.
“Woody Harrelson has joined Tom Hardy in Sony’s Venom movie,” they revealed. “Although character details are sparse, sources say Harrelson will play a henchman of sorts. Sony had no comment on the casting.”
The release of Venom will mark the first of Sony’s Spider-Man spin-offs.
And he’s not exactly a little-known character.
Created back in 1988, Venom has been one of Spider-Man’s most popular characters, eventually landing his own solo comics as well as appearing on the big screen once before, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
Venom is a symbiote – a sentient alien which latches onto a human host, imbuing them with superhuman abilities and a kick-ass costume… and is often depicted as disgraced journalist, Eddie Brock.
It’s thought that Tom Hardy (who landed the title role) will portray Eddie Brock, with reports that the classic Spider-Man foe Carnage will be the film’s main villain.
Who will Woody Harrelson play?
For now, that remains a bit of a mystery.
But following his appearance in War for the Planet of the Apes, it looks as though Harrelson is enjoying getting stuck into more villainous characters. And with a number of other Spider-Man spin-offs in the works, this could be just the first appearance of many.
Let’s just hope Harrelson’s character survives the events of the film.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Venom stars Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Michelle Lee.
Ruben Fleischer is directing the film, based on a script by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.
Venom heads to cinemas on 5 October 2018.
