X-Men: Apocalypse has revealed its first look at Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler… and he looks awesome.
Appearing on Instagram, director Bryan Singer lifted the lid on Nightcrawler’s new look… and the awesome reveal soon appeared on the film’s official Twitter, too.
“First day on set,” he said. “Here is @kodismitmcpheee as #Nightcrawler. Catch him before he’s gone.…”
Of course, Nightcrawler – or Kurt Wagner to his friends – is known for the awesome ability to teleport. And when you add superhuman agility and a prehensile tail into the mix, this is one X-Man you won’t forget you’ve seen.

And let’s not forget that he’s already a part of the X-Men film universe…
Last played by Alan Cumming in X2, the teleporting mutant hasn’t been seen since. But while the mutant’s blue-hued skin colour remains the same, there’s plenty about Nightcrawler that has changed.
Gone are the iconic full-body tattoos… instead, it looks as though we’re meeting this younger Nightcrawler before his first ink. Explained in X2 that Nightcrawler has one tattoo for every sin he’s committed, it seems Kodi Smit-McPhee’s version of the character is far more innocent.
But that’s not the only significant change…
Donning a blue and red jacket, it looks as though the new Nightcrawler takes plenty of inspiration from the comic books. After all, he’s most often seen in his iconic red and black garb… but has also thrown in a touch of blue every now and then.
Obviously, Smit-McPhee’s costume is a bit more practical – more like ordinary clothes than a superhero costume. But the inspiration is clearly there. And that’s definitely a good thing.
All-in-all, I can’t help thinking that Nightcrawler is looking pretty awesome.
But how will he fit into X-Men: Apocalypse? For now, we’ll have to wait anf see.
X-Men: Apocalypse heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016.
