It’s official – The New Mutants is now in pre-production.
Writer/director Josh Boone has teased that The New Mutants – the upcoming X-Men spin-off movie – has entered pre-production over at the 20th Century Fox lot. And he’s even given us a bit of a tease with some new Instagram images.
What does it tell us about the movie? Well… not an awful lot.
A few days ago on Josh Boone’s birthday, he posted the first of his teaser images.
The New Mutants director shared a shot of his birthday cake for all to see, which featured the classic comic book logo alongside a personalised birthday message. But it’s the hashtags that really give the game away.
“#birthdaycake #prep #newmutants #productionoffices”
Prep? Production offices? Clearly, Boone’s X-Men movie is ramping up…
He followed up this cool image with another one taken on the 20th Century Fox lot… and while it merely features him hanging out outside, the hashtags (once again) strongly suggest that The New Mutants is getting deep into pre-production.
“Staring off into the middle distance on the #foxlot during a break,” he said. “Thanks @knatelee #newmutants #makingmovies #makingmovieswithfriends #xmen #clouds”
The New Mutants was announced back in 2015, with Josh Boone slated to both write and direct the X-Men spin-off. And I can’t help thinking he’s perfect for the job – after all, his previous work includes the YA smash hit, The Fault in our Stars, which seems like a great fit considering The New Mutants features a younger generation of X-Men.
But how will The New Mutants fit into the X-Men universe?
At the moment, it’s not entirely clear… but I can’t help wondering whether it will spin-off from the recently released Logan, which saw a number of new mutants liberated as a result of Wolverine’s dying actions.
Of course, for now we’ll have to wait and see.
But it looks as though The New Mutants is one step closer to the big screen.
