Deadpool will already be getting his own X-Men spin-off in the years to come… but what about his long-time partner, Cable?
Cable plays an important role in the Deadpool comics, and with the rumoured X-Force film, could Fox be stepping it up? It looks as though they may introduce a number of solo films before teaming up the X-Force at a later date.
The great thing about X-Men is the sheer number of characters that could potentially have their own films. Most recently, in the wake of the Deadpool film set for 2016, co-creator of the Merc with the Mouth Rob Liefeld thinks it a genuine possibility.
Appearing at Comikaze, Liefeld described a meeting in which he discussed ideas with several producers. When it was addressed as to whether Cable should appear in the same film, Liefeld insisted that it’s coming…
“They don’t need to be in the same movie,” he said (via comicbook.com). “Cable is awesome. And he will…when he appears on screen, we’re all going to nerdgasm, because he’s coming. They can’t hold him back…”
While it’s nothing concrete, it’s certainly possible that his input may have a bearing on how things play out in future. If Fox is looking to compete with Marvel’s tactic of filming lesser known characters and bringing them to the big screen, Cable is certainly one on fan’s minds when they’re asked who they’d like to see next.
of course, if Cable does appear, it’s possible the upcoming X-Men Apocalypse story might provide his introduction. After all, Cable’s back story is intrinsically tied into that of Apocalypse. And the upcoming ‘X-Men’ movie could provide a neat gateway into the potential X-Force spin-off that we all want to see.
Will it lead to an eventual Deadpool/Cable team-up? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but we can’t help thinking that’s an awesome mutant buddy movie just waiting to happen.
As for Cable’s solo movie, hopefully nobody mistakes this for a Cable Guy spin-off. That could be awkward…
